a letter from US Citizen and Immigration Services with Residence card, employment card, permanent residence card

For individuals facing extreme hardship, violence, or dangerous conditions in their home countries, the U.S. immigration system offers several forms of humanitarian protection. These services are vital lifelines—but they are also complex, often requiring extensive documentation and a strong understanding of the legal process.

At Ruiz Immigration Law, LLC, based in Atlanta, Georgia, we are committed to helping immigrants seek safety, security, and a fresh start through available humanitarian immigration options. From DACA to U visas, our legal team works to protect the rights and dignity of those in vulnerable situations.

What Is Humanitarian Immigration?

Humanitarian immigration services are designed to offer legal protection and, in some cases, lawful immigration status to people who have experienced or are at risk of serious harm. This includes survivors of crime, domestic violence, persecution, and natural disasters, as well as children brought to the U.S. at a young age.

These protections are not automatic. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements and provide detailed evidence. That’s why working with an experienced immigration attorney is critical. At Ruiz Immigration Law, we guide clients through every step—helping them present a strong, organized, and compassionate case.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

DACA was established in 2012 to protect undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children. While DACA does not grant permanent legal status, it can provide:

  • Temporary protection from deportation
  • Work authorization
  • The ability to apply for a driver’s license in most states, including Georgia

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), more than 580,000 active DACA recipients currently live in the U.S. Many are students, professionals, and essential workers. Although new applications are currently limited due to ongoing litigation, renewals remain available.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

TPS is offered to individuals from countries experiencing armed conflict, environmental disaster, or other extraordinary conditions. While TPS doesn’t lead directly to permanent residency, it allows individuals to:

  • Remain in the U.S. legally
  • Obtain work authorization
  • Travel under certain conditions

Countries like Venezuela, Haiti, El Salvador, and others are currently designated for TPS. If you are from a TPS-designated country and meet the eligibility criteria, you may qualify for protection.

VAWA Self-Petitions

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows certain victims of domestic abuse to petition for lawful status without relying on their abuser. This includes:

  • Spouses, children, or parents of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents
  • Victims of emotional, physical, or psychological abuse

VAWA self-petitions are confidential and do not require the knowledge or consent of the abuser. This option is especially powerful for survivors seeking independence and safety.

U Visas for Crime Victims

If you have been the victim of a qualifying crime (such as assault, domestic violence, sexual abuse, or human trafficking) and have cooperated with law enforcement, you may be eligible for a U visa. Benefits include:

  • Legal status for up to four years
  • Work authorization
  • A pathway to a green card after three years

Each year, 10,000 U visas are available, and demand is high. Proper documentation—including a certification from law enforcement—is essential. Ruiz Immigration Law can help build your case and advocate for your protection.
